Matt Kelsey is a blood donation success story. Late last year, he was diagnosed with leukemia. At the time, he was severely anemic and had zero platelets (the component of blood that makes it clot) meaning he could bleed out internally. He needed platelet transfusions immediately, and through the course of this treatment received close to 50 blood products – whole blood and platelets.

For a guy who was used to helping others, both in his job as an emergency department technician at St. Clair Hospital and as a volunteer with Mt. Lebanon Fire Department, it was a tough transition from caregiver to patient.

Thankfully for Matt, his treatment led to the best possible outcome for his diagnosis, and six months later he was given a clean bill of health. He is eager to get back to helping others. Matt is advocating for blood donation, to make a difference in his community.

The Mt. Lebanon Fire Dept. is hosting the Matt Kelsey Victory Party Blood Drive, to be held August 27 at Bird Park in Mt. Lebanon, to replenish the blood supply that was available when he so desperately needed it.

“It’s very worrisome we are in this state of emergency for blood this summer,” he says. “I was very lucky that every time I showed up, blood was available. I’d hate to think what condition I’d be in if I’d shown up for a transfusion and the cupboards were bare.”

Also on Matt’s agenda: Marrying his fiancée, Sam, in October. His illness and treatment interfered with the couple’s goal of saving money towards the ceremony, but thanks to local nonprofit Jamie’s Dream Team, they won’t have to worry. Jamie’s Dream Team is picking up the cost.

“Matt’s story, and him being a firefighter and giving back to the community and everything about him was just amazing,” says Jamie Holmes, founder of Jamie’s Dream Team. “Things really came full circle. Matt had helped us fulfill a dream for a boy who was a patient at Children’s Hospital and wanted to see a real firetruck. He and Sam are such a wonderful couple, and we are so excited to do his wedding.”

Jamie’s Dream Team will also hold a BBQ fundraiser at the same time and location. Both events are open to the public. For more information on the BBQ, click here.
