The AABB will require that ISBT 128 be implemented in its 25th edition of its Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services. These standards are expected to be in effect in November 2008. The 24th edition of the Standards, which become effective in May 2006, requires that a written plan for implementation be in place. While now requiring ISBT 128, the Code of Federal Regulations requires machine readable labels by April 2006.
