“It would be an almost perfect world if every child could grow up without knowing the pain of cancer. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case for Gavin and too many other children. The Zane Carter Michael Kapp Memorial Corp, along with many other people in the community, want to give the people in need a fighting chance.”
Gavin Campbell, 14, was set to hit the court with the Wellsville Tiger seventh-grade basketball team when he was sidelined by a diagnosis of Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that occurs most frequently in teenagers and young adults.
His classmates and community immediately rallied around Gavin. With money he received from family, friends, and other kind people in the area, Gavin purchased a dog from Angels for Animals. His faithful new canine pal, Rex, sticks by his side, playing with him when Gavin feels up to it and comforting him when he’s not feeling well.
Team Gavin continues to support the family with fundraisers and by helping the avid Steelers and Pirates fan keep his spirits up by “wearing gold for Gavin.” Gavin is being home schooled while he undergoes chemotherapy and radiation at Akron Children’s Hospital. He looks forward to attending church camp this summer.
Gavin has already needed three blood transfusions and received platelets at the same time. Because they know the importance of blood transfusions to patients like Gavin, The Zane Carter Michael Kapp Memorial Corp is hosting a replenishment blood drive in Gavin’s honor – to give him and others like him a fighting chance.
