Donation Process

PRE-DONATION PROCEDURE:

What To Do Prior To Donating

  • Make an appointment beforehand to minimize wait time

  • Drink plenty of decaffeinated fluids and have a good meal before you donate

  • Do not take aspirin for at least 48 hours before donating (applies to platelet donors only)

  • Review basic eligibility requirements

  • When donating at a mobile location, review the schedule on My Personal Donation History to ensure that it has not been cancelled or rescheduled

What To Eat Before Donating

A healthy diet helps ensure a successful blood donation, and also makes donors feel better. Focus on low fat and iron rich foods. Low fat foods include whole grains, hot and cold cereals, vegetables, fruits, chicken breasts, low fat milk, and nonfat yogurt. Iron rich foods include red meat, fish, poultry, egg, strawberries, bananas, tomato or apple juice, white or wheat bread, raisins, prunes, and spinach.

What To Bring When Donating

  • Brighten Life personalized Donor ID card

  • List of medications you are taking

  • List of places visited outside of the U.S. in the past 3 years

  • A friend to donate with you!
